Every year on March 4, World Obesity Day is observed around the world with various events aimed at raising awareness about obesity and emphasizing the importance of healthy lifestyle habits. Today, obesity is considered not merely an individual health issue, but a significant global public health problem that affects the health of society as a whole.
According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), obesity is a major risk factor for many chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, certain types of cancer, and musculoskeletal disorders. A sedentary lifestyle, unhealthy eating habits, and the increasing role of technology in making daily life more sedentary are contributing to rising obesity rates worldwide.
In this context, sports science and physical activity play a critical role in preventing obesity and promoting a healthy lifestyle. Regular physical activity makes significant contributions to maintaining energy balance, preserving metabolic health, strengthening the musculoskeletal system, and improving individuals’ quality of life.
The Faculty of Sports Sciences continues its educational, research, and community engagement initiatives with the aim of encouraging individuals to adopt active lifestyles, raising awareness of physical activity in society, and promoting a culture of healthy living. Scientific studies conducted within the Faculty highlight the importance of physical activity in combating obesity while contributing to the promotion of an active lifestyle across various segments of society.
On the occasion of World Obesity Day, regular exercise, a balanced diet, and the adoption of an active lifestyle are of great importance for a healthy life. An active lifestyle, starting with small steps, positively impacts both physical and psychological health, opening the door to a higher quality of life.
Making physical activity a part of daily life is one of the most powerful steps we can take in the fight against obesity to build a healthier society.
